Shirakawa-go is surrounded by mountains with rice fields stretching across the valley and gentle rivers flowing through, earning it the nickname "Kingdom of Forests and Streams." The Ogimachi village in Shirakawa-go is the largest of the three World Heritage-listed villages in the region (Shirakawa-go, Ainokura, and Suganuma), with 152 households.
The village name comes from the Daisekigawa River, which turns milky-white after merging with the Shogawa River, originating from Mount Hakusan. From the Shiroyama Observatory in the northeast of Ogimachi, you can enjoy panoramic views of the entire Gassho village and the surrounding mountains.
