Best Split Tours & Trips

Situated along the Adriatic coast, Split is the second largest city in Croatia. Although visitors may not stay long in this transportation hub, it has something for everyone. Roman emperor Diocletian built his palace here in ancient times. Now the medieval quarter lies to its west and to the north is Veli Varos, built from the 14th through 17th century. East of Old Town is Bacvice with beaches and vibrant nightlife. Take a bike ride along the harbor-side promenade or hop a ferry to the many offshore islands. Split also has Roman ruins, museums, views from Marjan hill and crazed fans of the HNK Hajduk Split football club.

Best Time to Visit Split

Spring 2026/2027
With blooming vegetation and rising temperatures, spring brings renewed vibrancy to Split. May stands out as the top month, offering comfortable weather around 15°C–20°C (59°F–68°F) and ideal conditions for outdoor activities. Travelers can explore Marjan Hill’s scenic trails, wander through Diocletian’s Palace, or take the first boat trips of the season to nearby islands like Brač and Hvar. Spring events such as Sudamja Fest, celebrating the city’s patron saint, fill Split with parades, music, and traditional performances. This season combines cultural exploration, coastal relaxation, and mild sunshine, making it a perfect time for both city and nature experiences.

Summer 2026
Hot, sun-drenched days define Split’s summer, transforming the city into one of Croatia’s most popular coastal destinations. August is the busiest month, with temperatures around 28°C–32°C (82°F–90°F) and bustling beaches along the Adriatic Sea. Visitors flock to Bacvice Beach, join island-hopping excursions, and enjoy open-air dining on the Riva. The Split Summer Festival brings theatre, music, and dance performances to historic venues, while nightlife thrives in beach bars and harborside cafés. Tourists can walking through Diocletian’s Palace at night, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and joining guided boat tours make summer a vibrant mix of culture and relaxation.

Autumn 2026
Split's autumn brings gentle sunshine and warm seas to the city, making it one of the most charming seasons in Split. September is the most popular month, offering pleasant temperatures around 20°C–25°C (68°F–77°F) and the year’s best swimming conditions with fewer crowds. Travelers enjoy leisurely visits to the Old Town, kayaking along the coast, or taking day trips to nearby islands. Seasonal food festivals and wine events highlight Dalmatian cuisine, while cultural performances and local markets add charm to the city’s relaxed pace. Autumn provides an excellent balance of beach time, history, and culinary exploration, making it a favorite among travelers seeking a calmer yet still vibrant coastal experience.

Winter 2026/2027
Winter in Split brings cool breezes and tranquil coastal streets, temperatures average around 8°C–12°C (46°F–54°F), making it milder than much of Europe. December is the most popular month thanks to Advent in Split, a festive event that fills the Riva promenade with lights, music, and seasonal food stalls. Winter is perfect for exploring Diocletian’s Palace, museums, and ancient cellars without the summer crowds. Visitors can enjoy seaside walks, discover local cafés, and join holiday concerts throughout the Old Town. Though the sea is too cold for swimming, the crisp air and peaceful ambiance create an inviting atmosphere for cultural sightseeing.

7-Day Balkan UNESCO Heritage Loop Tour from Budapest (Plitvice Lakes, Dubrovnik Walls)

Fell in love with the Balkans

I’d heard of Dubrovnik because of TV shows, but seeing the walls in person was beyond amazing. Plitvice’s turquoise lakes felt unreal, like a postcard. Sarajevo’s mix of cultures was eye-opening, and Mostar’s bridge was pure magic. Everything ran smoothly, from hotels to transfers, and the group vibe was great.

FAQs about Split Tours

What is the best time of year to visit Split?

Visit Split between late September and early November or from March to early June for mild temperatures (18–25°C) and fewer tourists. These shoulder seasons offer comfortable sightseeing conditions and lower accommodation prices. Peak summer months (July-August) are hot and crowded.

How do I get from Split Airport (SPU) to the city center using public transportation?

Take bus line 37 or 37K from Split Airport to the city center - both run daily every 30 minutes. The ride takes 30-40 minutes and costs 40 HRK (approx. €5.50). Tickets are available at the airport kiosk or from the driver. The bus stops near the main ferry terminal and Diocletian's Palace.

Is the Split Card worth it for tourists, and what attractions does it cover?

Yes, the Split Card is ideal for tourists wanting unlimited access to public transport, entry to over 30 museums, and discounts on tours and boat trips. It covers Diocletian’s Palace basement, the Cathedral of St. Domnius bell tower, and the City Museum. Cards start at 50 HRK for 24 hours.

Are there any local customs I should be aware of when visiting churches in Split?

When visiting religious sites like the Cathedral of St. Domnius, dress respectfully - avoid shorts, sleeveless tops, and bare shoulders. Both men and women should cover their legs and shoulders. Keep voices low, refrain from eating, and do not take photos during services. These practices show respect for local traditions.
