Best Queenstown Tours & Trips

Queenstown is a resort town in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island, built around the shores of Lake Wakatipu and set against the dramatic Southern Alps. It is internationally recognized as the adventure capital of the world, offering a mix of extreme sports and luxury relaxation in a rugged alpine setting. The town serves as a base for activities like bungy jumping, jet boating, and skydiving, while the nearby Remarkables and Coronet Peak mountain ranges are major destinations for skiing and snowboarding. For those seeking a slower pace, the Skyline Gondola provides a steep ascent to Bob’s Peak for panoramic views of the town and the lake. Many travelers use Queenstown as a starting point for day trips to Milford Sound or to explore the historic gold mining town of Arrowtown.

Best Time to Visit Queenstown

Spring 2026
Spring in Queenstown is the season of "dual-adventures." You can often ski in the morning and go for a sunny mountain bike ride or a round of golf in the afternoon. Temperatures rise to 8°C to 18°C (46°F–64°F), and the landscape is a mix of white-capped mountains and bright green valleys filled with spring lambs and wildflowers. This is "waterfall season," as snowmelt fuels the cascades in Milford Sound and the Dart River. While the weather can be unpredictable with occasional rain (October is the wettest month), the fresh energy and the sight of the garden blooms make it a revitalizing time to visit.

Summer 2026
Summer in Queenstown temperatures range from 10°C to 25°C (50°F–77°F), though it can occasionally hit 30°C. This is the peak season for adrenaline: skydiving, bungy jumping at the Kawarau Bridge, and the iconic Shotover Jet. The lake becomes a playground for kayaking and cruises on the TSS Earnslaw. It’s also the premier time for "Great Walks" like the Routeburn Track. The vibe is high-energy, with hikers and mountain bikers filling the trails and the waterfront buzzing with alfresco dining and stone-fruit stalls.

Autumn 2026
The most spectacular season for photographers, as the nearby historic town of Arrowtown erupts in a sea of yellow, gold, and vibrant orange. Daytime highs settle between 12°C and 20°C (54°F–68°F), dropping sharply at night. The weather is often calm and stable, making it the perfect "shoulder season" for vineyard tours in the Gibbston Valley wine region. In April, the Arrowtown Autumn Festival celebrates this seasonal shift. It is a time for crisp morning hikes, clear views of the Remarkables, and enjoying the region's world-class Pinot Noir without the summer crowds.

Winter 2026/2027
Winter transforms Queenstown into a world-class ski destination. Temperatures average between 0°C and 10°C (32°F–50°F), but can drop much lower overnight. The surrounding peaks—The Remarkables and Coronet Peak—become a hub for skiers and snowboarders. The town takes on a festive, "après-ski" atmosphere with roaring fires in bars and the smell of mulled wine in the air. This is also the best time to visit the Onsen Hot Pools, where you can soak in cedar-lined tubs while overlooking the snow-dusted Shotover River canyon. Winter is moody, magical, and the busiest time for the city’s nightlife.

Milford Sound Southern Discoveries Day Tour from Queenstown: Coach, Cruise and Fly Experience丨Picnic Lunch Included

Everything ran really smoothly and the staff were great. We were lucky with clear skies, but I can imagine the flight might not be as good on cloudy days.

10-Day Southern National Parks Tour from Christchurch: Mt Cook, Queenstown, Milford Sound and Franz Josef | Flexible Independent Travel

Southern National Parks

We had a great trip, but the amount of rain was a little disappointing, most of our National parks days were rained out. We wanted to avoid the crowds of summer, which we definitely did, but thinking now fall may have been a better time to visit! Though we did have two perfect weather days in Milford, which we were told was pretty unusual. Everything went so smoothly, all the shuttles were great. Our shuttle driver from Queenstown to Franz Josef, was particularly good. They saw we liked taking photos and knew all the scenic places to stop so we could pop out and photograph. The app was super easy and convenient, and the help when we made itinerary adjustments due to weather was appreciated.

19-Day New Zealand & Australia Tour: Auckland, Rotorua, Queenstown, Sydney, Uluru and Cairns

This tour was an absolute highlight of my travels.

The itinerary was well-balanced between action-packed days and moments of relaxation. Rotorua’s Maori culture and Cairns’ Great Barrier Reef snorkeling were experiences I’ll never forget.

14-Day New Zealand Vista Tour from Auckland: Rotorua, Wellington, Picton, Christchurch, Mt Cook, Dunedin, Te Anau, Milford Sound, Queenstown and Franz Josef | Flexible Independent Travel

New Zealand Vista

We have just returned from an amazing independent tour of New Zealand. All the hotels & tours were fantastic. The APP we were provided with was very helpful, giving advice about things to do and places to eat etc. Throughout the trip we had immediate access to someone who could help us if needed. If I ever have the opportunity to visit this wonderful country again, I would definitely use company again. Thank you.

FAQs about Queenstown Tours

What is the best time of year to visit Queenstown?

The best time to visit Queenstown is during the Southern Hemisphere summer, from December to February. Expect daytime temperatures of 20–25°C and longer daylight hours. While rain can occur year-round, summer has the lowest rainfall. Shoulder seasons (November, March–April) also offer fewer crowds and stable conditions ideal for hiking, biking, and lake cruises.

How do I get from Queenstown Airport (ZQN) to the city center affordably and quickly?

From Queenstown Airport (ZQN), take the Shuttle Bus Queenstown or InterCity Connect shuttle for a reliable, affordable transfer to the city center (8-minute drive, from NZ$25). Taxis (up to NZ$40) and rideshares like Uber are faster but costlier. Rental car desks are available airside, but driving is unnecessary for most visitors due to compact layout and transit options.

Is the Queenstown 48-Hour Explorer Bus Pass worth it for visiting nearby attractions like Glenorchy and Arrowtown?

Yes, the 48-Hour Explorer Bus Pass (NZ$99) offers excellent value if visiting Glenorchy, Arrowtown, or Skippers Canyon. It includes unlimited hop-on/hop-off access across five scenic routes. Ideal for budget travelers without a car. Note: Schedules are limited (1–3 runs daily), so plan around departure times. Not suitable for same-day round-trips to remote areas requiring flexibility.

Is it better to stay in Wanaka or Queenstown?

If it is your first time in the region, stay in Queenstown for the sheer variety of activities and convenience. If you are returning or want a peaceful retreat to focus on hiking and photography, Wānaka is the winner.
