Question 1

What is the best time to visit Mohe to see the Northern Lights?

Accepted Answer

Visit between late May and late July for the Midnight Sun, which offers 24 hours of daylight. While true auroras are rare due to latitude, clear winter nights from December to February provide the best chance to spot faint northern lights near Beiji Village. Dress in heavy thermal layers as temperatures drop below -40C.

Question 2

How do I travel from Mohe Gulian Airport to Beiji Village?

Accepted Answer

Mohe Gulian Airport (OHE) is located about 60 kilometers from Beiji Village. There is no direct public bus. Travelers must book a private taxi or arrange a hotel shuttle in advance, costing roughly 150 to 200 RMB. The drive takes approximately one hour on paved roads, but request a vehicle with winter tires if traveling between November and March.

Question 3

Is cash still necessary for payments in remote areas of Mohe?

Accepted Answer

While WeChat Pay and Alipay are accepted in most hotels and restaurants in Beiji Village, cash remains essential in remote homestays or small roadside stalls. ATMs are scarce outside Mohe County town. Carry sufficient Chinese Yuan in small denominations before heading north, as card terminals often fail during extreme cold snaps in winter months.

Question 4

What unique customs should visitors observe in Beiji Village?

Accepted Answer

Beiji Village markets itself as China's northernmost point. Visitors often mail postcards from the local post office to receive a special northernmost stamp. Respect local Han Chinese customs; tipping is not expected. When visiting the Heilongjiang River border, do not cross the marked lines into Russian territory, as border patrols monitor the area strictly year-round.
