Spring in Milan is a popular and busy time, offering some of the best weather for sightseeing before the summer heat hits. Temperatures start cool in March, with average highs around 14°C (57°F), but quickly warm up to a very pleasant 22°C (72°F) by May. Days are getting much longer, and the city feels vibrant as everyone heads outdoors to enjoy an aperitivo on the terraces. While the weather is generally mild, this is one of the rainiest seasons, especially in May. This period is famous for major events like Milan Design Week in April and Fashion Week dates in late February/early March, which makes the city incredibly crowded and drives hotel prices high. If you want great weather and lower prices, aim for late April or May.

Summer in Milan is hot and often very humid, with average high temperatures peaking around 30°C (86°F) in July and August. The humidity, combined with the urban heat island effect, can make it feel much hotter and muggier, especially at night. You'll get plenty of sunshine, but be prepared for intense, localized thunderstorms that can occur suddenly in the late afternoon. The unique thing about summer in Milan is August: it's the hottest month, but the city empties as most Milanese residents take their traditional holiday leave, often leaving for the coast or the mountains. This means you’ll find fewer crowds at the Duomo and the museums, but many smaller restaurants and boutiques will be closed for the entire month.

Autumn is the best time to visit Milan, offering the most balanced weather conditions for all-day exploration. The heat and humidity of summer quickly fade, leaving a stretch of clear, beautiful days. Temperatures remain warm in September, averaging 25°C (77°F), then cool down to a crisp 13°C (55°F) by November. September and early October offer perfect weather for walking tours and day trips to Lake Como before the cold sets in. However, the downside is that this is the second rainiest period, with November seeing the highest total rainfall of the year, so bring a solid coat and waterproof shoes. Like spring, autumn has its high-profile events, including another round of Fashion Week in September.
