Best Israel Vacation Packages

Located on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea at the crossroads of Asia and Africa, Israel is a small country where you can drive from snowy mountains to desert craters in just a few hours. In Jerusalem, the atmosphere is heavy with history, especially within the stone walls of the Old City, where the Western Wall and Church of the Holy Sepulchre sit blocks apart. In contrast, Tel Aviv feels like a Mediterranean version of Miami, known for its long sandy beaches, Bauhaus architecture, and a nightlife scene that stays busy until sunrise. You can spend a morning floating effortlessly in the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth, and an afternoon hiking up to the ancient fortress of Masada. Further north, the green hills of the Galilee and the terraced Bahá’í Gardens in Haifa offer a quieter, more scenic side of the country.

Dead Sea & Masada: The Classic Israel Day Trip

Best Places to Visit in Israel

For most first-time visitors, Jerusalem is the place to start. The city's Old City brings together thousands of years of history within a remarkably small area. Major landmarks include the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Via Dolorosa, and historic quarters filled with religious sites, markets, and narrow stone streets. Tel Aviv offers a completely different side of Israel. Instead of ancient monuments, the city is known for Mediterranean beaches, restaurants, nightlife, markets, and contemporary neighborhoods. Nearby Jaffa adds historic streets, galleries, waterfront views, and an old port to the experience.

The Dead Sea is another essential stop. Famous for its extremely salty water and desert setting, it is commonly combined with nearby Masada, the ancient fortress overlooking the Judean Desert and Dead Sea. If you have seven days or more, consider extending your trip into northern Israel. Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee are especially popular with travelers interested in biblical and religious history, while other northern destinations add historic towns and different landscapes to the itinerary. For a first trip, Jerusalem + Tel Aviv + Dead Sea + Masada provides the most balanced introduction to Israel.

Jerusalem vs Tel Aviv: Where Should You Spend More Time

Jerusalem and Tel Aviv are only a short distance apart, but the travel experiences are very different. Choose Jerusalem if your priorities are history, archaeology, religious landmarks, museums, and cultural sightseeing. The Old City alone can occupy a full day, and travelers interested in religious or historical sites can easily spend two or three days in the city.

Choose Tel Aviv if you prefer beaches, food, nightlife, shopping, markets, and a more relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. Jaffa can be explored alongside central Tel Aviv, making the city relatively easy to include at the beginning or end of an Israel trip. First-time visitors usually should not choose between the two. A practical split is two to three days in Jerusalem and one to two days in Tel Aviv. Jerusalem generally deserves more sightseeing time, while Tel Aviv works well as a lighter contrast to the historic destinations elsewhere in the country.

Dead Sea & Masada: The Classic Israel Day Trip

The Dead Sea and Masada are often visited together because they are located in the same general region and can fit comfortably into a full-day excursion. Masada is one of Israel's best-known archaeological sites. The fortress stands high above the surrounding desert, offering dramatic views toward the Dead Sea. Visitors can reach the summit by cable car, while hikers may choose one of the walking routes when weather conditions allow.

After exploring Masada, many travelers continue to the Dead Sea for its famous floating experience. Designated beaches and resorts provide easier water access, changing facilities, and showers. Because summer temperatures in the Judean Desert can become extremely hot, an early start is particularly useful when visiting Masada. Travelers staying in Jerusalem can visit both attractions without changing hotels. Organized Masada and Dead Sea tours are also convenient for visitors who do not want to rent a car or coordinate transportation between individual sites.

How Many Days Do You Need in Israel

For most first-time travelers, five to seven days provides enough time to see Israel's main highlights without making the trip feel rushed.
3–4 days: Focus on Jerusalem plus one additional destination, such as Tel Aviv or the Dead Sea and Masada.

5–7 days: Combine Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Masada, and the Dead Sea. This is the best general itinerary for travelers visiting Israel for the first time.

8–10 days: Add northern Israel, including destinations such as Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee, while allowing more time in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Travelers primarily interested in religious or historical sites may want to spend more time in Jerusalem and northern Israel. Those looking for a mix of sightseeing and leisure can allocate additional time to Tel Aviv and the Mediterranean coast.

Getting Around Israel

Jerusalem and Tel Aviv are well connected, making it easy to include both cities in the same trip. Depending on your itinerary, travelers can use trains, buses, private transfers, rental cars, or organized tours. Within Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, many major sightseeing areas can be explored on foot or with local public transportation.

Trips to Masada and the Dead Sea require more planning because the attractions are outside the major cities. Renting a car provides flexibility, while guided day tours simplify transportation and allow travelers to visit multiple attractions in a single day.
The same applies to northern Israel. Destinations such as Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee can be combined by car or through organized sightseeing tours. Remember that public transportation schedules may be reduced around Shabbat and religious holidays, so check your travel dates before relying on buses or trains.
