Best Hobart Tours & Trips

One of Australia’s most historic cities is this capital city of the island state of Tasmania. Hobart, which lies at the foot of Mt. Wellington, was founded in 1803 as a penal colony and is the second-oldest city in Australia and widely considered its most beautiful state capital due to its colonial brick-and-sandstone buildings that line Hobart’s narrow streets. Today the city has the second deepest natural port in the world and is known for its quality restaurants, jazz clubs and the Wrest Point Casino.

Best Time to Visit Hobart

Autumn2026/2027
Autumn is many locals' favorite season, characterized by calm, crystal-clear days and the spectacular "turning of the fagus" in the nearby highlands. Average temperatures fall between 9°C and 17°C (48°F–63°F). The city’s heritage sandstone buildings are framed by fiery reds and oranges as the European trees in Battery Point and the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens change color. This is a stable, "mellow" time of year, perfect for exploring the Salamanca Market without the summer crowds or taking a scenic drive through the Huon Valley for the apple harvest. The light is soft and golden, making it a premier season for photography and quiet vineyard lunches.

Winter2026/2027
Winter in Hobart is crisp, atmospheric, and unashamedly cold, defined by snow-dusted peaks and the dark, edgy energy of the Dark Mofo festival. Temperatures range from 5°C to 12°C (41°F–54°F), often dropping toward freezing overnight. While the southerly winds from the Antarctic bring a sharp chill, the city frequently enjoys bright blue skies and still air. This is the season for "the Off-Season," where the city embraces its moody side with whiskey tastings by open fires and the famous winter solstice nude swim. The sight of kunanyi / Mount Wellington covered in a thick blanket of snow provides a stunning backdrop to the steam rising from the harbor.

Spring2027
Spring is a season of dramatic contrasts and rapid renewal. Temperatures rise to a range of 8°C to 17°C (46°F–63°F), though this is also Hobart's windiest and most unpredictable period. One day might feel like a warm invitation to summer, while the next brings a dusting of "unseasonal" snow to the mountain. The city’s gardens burst into life with rhododendrons and tulips, and the Hobart Airport Marathon sees runners taking over the waterfront. It is an invigorating time to visit, as the days lengthen and the wilderness areas, like the nearby Mount Field National Park, are lush and teeming with life after the winter rains.

Summer2027
Summer in Hobart is a season of long, golden twilight and high-octane maritime energy. Daytime temperatures typically range from 12°C to 22°C (54°F–72°F), making it arguably the most comfortable summer in Australia. The sun is surprisingly strong due to the clean air, but the heat is rarely oppressive. This is the peak of the festival season, centered around the finish of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and the Taste of Summer food festival on the waterfront. Locals and visitors flock to the beaches of Sandy Bay or take the ferry to MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). With sunset not occurring until nearly 9:00 PM in late December, the city feels endlessly vibrant and outdoor-focused.

FAQs about Hobart Tours

What is the best time of year to visit Hobart?

Visit Hobart between October and April for milder weather and outdoor activities. Late spring (October–November) and early autumn (March–April) offer comfortable temperatures (15–22°C), fewer tourists, and minimal rainfall. Summer (December–February) is peak season—expect crowds at festivals like Taste of Tasmania but book accommodations early.

How do I get from Hobart Airport to the city center using public transport?

Take the Metro Tasmania Route 429 shuttle bus from the airport terminal to Hobart city center. Buses run every 30 minutes daily, operating from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The journey takes 25 minutes and costs $5 (adult single). Purchase tickets via cash, MetroCard, or the MetroTas app. Taxis and rideshares are also available outside arrivals.

Is a car necessary to explore Hobart and nearby attractions like Port Arthur or Mount Wellington?

A car is recommended for visiting Port Arthur (90-minute drive) and exploring beyond Hobart. While public tours and buses serve some sites—like the Port Arthur Historic Site from Hobart—owning a vehicle offers flexibility for remote areas like Tahune AirWalk or Bruny Island. Within the city, walking or cycling suffices for most central attractions.

What local pass or card offers the best value for accessing Hobart’s top attractions?

The Tasmania Heritage Pass provides good value for visitors planning to explore multiple historic sites. It includes entry to MONA, Port Arthur Historic Site, and other nearby attractions with 3, 5, or 7-day options. Alternatively, book MONA ferry and entry combo tickets online for savings. Individual attraction pricing is standard; no city-wide pass exists.
