Best Genoa Tours & Trips

The Mediterranean port city located in Northern Italy is more than just the birthplace of legendary explorer Christopher Columbus. It's a cultural mecca with many museums, historic palaces, art galleries and the second largest aquarium in Europe. Genoa's origins date back to at least 6th Century BC and it has a rainbow of pastel color buildings along its coast. Popular city spots are St. Lawrence Cathedral, Rolli Palaces, Palace of St. George, Lanterna, Doge's Palace, The Royal Palace of Genoa, Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno, The Aquarium of Genoa and Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art. Genoa's old city Via Garibaldi is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site.

Best Time to Visit Genoa

Autumn 2026
Autumn is a delightful time to visit, offering a quick transition to mild and highly comfortable conditions with a noticeable drop in the summer heat and humidity. Temperatures gradually decrease from a warm 24°C to 27°C (75°F to 81°F) in September to a pleasant 18°C to 21°C (64°F to 70°F) by November. This is the period when rainfall is at its highest, particularly in October and November, often coming in the form of heavy but short-lived storms. However, the mild temperatures and the sea retaining its warmth make it an excellent time for unhurried exploration. This season is highly recommended for sightseeing, wandering the narrow carrugi, and visiting museums like the Palazzo Ducale without the summer rush.

Winter 2026/2027
Winter in Genoa is notably mild compared to northern Italian cities, thanks to the moderating influence of the sea. Average daytime highs hover between a cool 10°C and 13°C (50°F and 55°F), with night temperatures rarely dipping near the freezing point of 0°C (32°F). While this is one of the cooler and cloudier periods, the city benefits from less fog and snow compared to the Po Valley. This season is the quietest in terms of visitor numbers, offering travelers low accommodation rates and a tranquil environment. It’s an ideal time for focusing on the city’s indoor attractions, such as the numerous historical palaces of the Via Garibaldi, and enjoying the local seafood specialties.

Spring 2027
Spring is an excellent time for visiting, seeing a smooth and rapid transition to beautifully warm and comfortable weather. Temperatures rise from a cool 15°C (59°F) high in March to a delightful 20°C to 24°C (68°F to 75°F) by May. Sunshine hours increase significantly, creating ideal conditions for exploring the city and its surrounding areas, such as the colorful Cinque Terre, which is easily accessible from Genoa. Rainfall decreases from the autumn and winter peaks, ensuring reliable weather for outdoor walking and boat trips along the coast. The beautiful weather and manageable visitor numbers make this a highly appealing time to enjoy the fresh sea air and sights before the full heat of summer arrives.

Summer 2027
Summer in Genoa is marked by warm to hot temperatures and high humidity, though coastal breezes often help moderate the heat compared to inland Italy. Daily high temperatures generally peak between 27°C and 30°C (81°F and 86°F). The weather is very stable, with abundant sunshine and minimal rainfall, making it the primary period for coastal activities and exploring the city’s extensive waterfront. This season attracts a large number of visitors drawn to the Old Port's lively atmosphere and the promise of warm sea swimming. The sea temperature is at its highest, reaching about 24°C (75°F). The long, warm evenings are spent enjoying beverages and meals in open-air settings in the historical center and near the coast.

Reviews for Genoa Tours

A
7-Day Italy, Switzerland & France Loop Tour: Rome City Walk, Venice, Florence & the French Riviera

Tour guide is great, and has great knowledge of each place. Although the trip was hard for my niece who is first timer because it is not in English, Alisa did her best to explain to us in English in between. Chinese talks. The driver is very careful and good, not erratic like some drivers in tours. Website advertisement must specify the long walks required. Hotels were far from centres.

7-Day Italy, Switzerland & France Loop Tour: Rome, Venice, Lucerne & the French Riviera

The guide was patient and always reminded us about meeting times. The Rome walking tour was one of our favorite parts. My parents especially liked the smaller stops where they could take photos without feeling rushed.

【Flexible Tour】2-7 Days Italy, Switzerland & France Tour from Paris: Rome, Venice, Florence, Lucerne & Nice

I traveled with my husband and chose the 6-day option. The French Riviera was the highlight for us. Cannes and Nice were both beautiful. Our guide was friendly and kept the group organized. Hotels were simple but clean, and breakfast was convenient every morning.

7-Day Southern Adventure Loop Tour from Paris/Lucerne: Italy, Switzerland, France, Vatican City, Monaco

Amazing places

We visited some amazing places which I believe it would have been impossible to do without these guys. It was very convenient and we had an awesome tour guide. Very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Looking forward to our next trip. Some of the hotel rooms were too small but I guess it is to be expected in Europe and the money spent.

FAQs about Genoa Tours

How do I get from Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport to the city center?

Take the Volabus shuttle directly from the airport to Genoa Piazza Principe train station in 20 minutes. Buses depart every 20-30 minutes, cost €8 one-way, and tickets are available at the airport kiosk or online. Taxis cost around €25-€30 and take 15 minutes depending on traffic.

Is Genoa safe for solo travelers exploring the old town at night?

Yes, Genoa’s historic center is generally safe, but remain cautious in poorly lit alleys after dark. Stick to main streets like Via San Lorenzo or Via XX Settembre, avoid empty shortcuts, and keep belongings secure. Most violent crime is rare, but pickpocketing can occur in crowded areas or late-night bars.

What is the best local transport pass for visiting Genoa’s museums and public transit?

The Genova City Card is ideal - it includes unlimited public transport, free entry to over 20 museums (including Palazzo Ducale), and discounts on tours. Choose 24, 48, or 72-hour options (from €17). Pick it up at tourist offices or the airport.

When is the rainy season in Genoa, and should I reschedule my visit?

Genoa’s wettest months are October and November, with frequent but brief rainfall. Showers rarely last all day, so travel need not be rescheduled. Carry a compact umbrella and waterproof jacket. April-June and September offer milder weather and fewer rains for optimal sightseeing.
