Learn About Top Things To Do In Banff

Banff, located in the Canadian Rockies, has spectacular natural beauty and abundant natural activities. If you are thinking, what are the top things to do in Banff? Here are the answers to help you plan a Banff day trip.

Things to do in Banff

When you come to Banff National Park, the countless attractions mean there are so many diverse things to do. You can explore its iconic natural wonders and take part in a variety of tours, making it easy to decide what to do in Banff.

Lake Louise and Moraine Lake: These two lakes are the most iconic sightseeing spots in the Canadian Rockies. Consider a day trip to Lake Louise from Banff or book a Moraine Lake tour to see the beautiful lake views. Early in the morning is recommended for the best views and fewer crowds. Note that Moraine Lake is best visited in the summer, when the lake takes on its most beautiful turquoise color.

Columbia Icefield: For those seeking a more unique nature adventure, the Columbia Icefield tour will take you on a glacier journey. Climbing up the Athabasca Glacier on the Ice Explorer and slowly walking on the Glacier Skywalk will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Peyto Lake: This is also one of the lakes in Banff National Park with a turquoise surface. The best way to see it is to go up to the observation deck for a panoramic view of the lake.

Lake Minnewanka: The lake is located a short distance from the town of Banff and is the largest and deepest lake in Banff National Park, which allows it to be visited by boat. Take a Lake Minnewanka cruise for views of the Canadian Rockies from the water and the chance to observe wildlife.

Johnston Canyon: Hike along the suspended walkway through magnificent canyons and view waterfalls, including the famous “Inkpot” Falls.

Banff Gondola: The Banff Gondola takes 8 minutes to get you to the top of Sulphur Mountain, where you can see the town of Banff and the Bow Valley.

Banff Big Canoe Tour: This outdoor activity is special enough for those with an adventurous spirit. You'll be paddling down the Bow River in a big canoe with a guide, during this time the guide will introduce you to the landscape and wildlife along the way.

Best time to visit Banff

The best season to visit Banff is the summer months of June-August, when the warm weather makes it more suitable for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and canoeing. And many attractions, such as Moraine Lake, are at their best colors in the summer.

Next in line are spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) for cooler temperatures, sparse crowds, and beautiful scenery, with fall larch especially good for photography and for hiking. However, some attractions may be closed due to weather restrictions.

Winter (November through March) is perfect for skiing, snowboarding, ice skating and other snow activities. Some popular attractions will be closed during this time.

Banff transportation and ticket information

How to get around

The town of Banff is suitable for walking, but a car is recommended if you want to explore further afield, such as Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, and the Icefields Parkway. There are also public transportation options within Banff National Park that encompass popular attractions, with the 8X and 8S route buses requiring reservations.

National Park Pass

A Parks Canada pass is required to enter Banff National Park. You can purchase them online in advance, at the park entrance, or at the visitor center. If you're staying longer or want to visit more parks, purchasing an annual pass will be a more cost-effective option.

Advance Booking

It is highly recommended to book popular trips in advance, such as the Lake Louise trip from Banff or the Moraine Lake tours from Banff, especially during peak season, as these trips often sell out.

Gear and essentials

Please pack your bags according to the season. In summer, bring comfortable walking shoes, rain gear, and layers of clothing. In winter, essential gear includes warm, waterproof clothing, insulated boots, and miniature spikes for icy surfaces. When hiking, be sure to carry bear spray and know how to use it. Sunscreen and insect repellent are useful year-round.
