Banff is the first town to be incorporated within a Canadian national park and it is the second highest elevated community in Alberta. The town is considered a resort town and attracts many visitors because of its many hot springs and mountains. The town was first settled in the 1880s and later made into a resort town due to its location. Banff is located near many mountains including Cascade Mountains and Sulphur Mountains, and is situated above the Bow Falls, near the Bow River and Spray River.

Best Time to Visit Banff

Spring 2026
During spring the Banff region begins to awaken from its winter state, with average daytime highs rising from around 0 °C in early March toward 10-15 °C by late May, though nights remain cold and snow patches may linger in shaded alpine zones. The thawing valleys open wildlife-viewing opportunities as bears emerge and eagles soar along the Bow Valley. Trails near Lake Louise gradually clear, and the mirrored waters of Vermilion Lakes reflect fresh snow-capped peaks. Fewer tourists allow a more peaceful experience at hotspots like Johnston Canyon and the Banff Gondola, while wildflowers begin to dot meadow clearings and roadside look-outs provide crisp, early-season light for photography.

Summer 2026
Summer in Banff offers comfortably warm days - average highs reach roughly 22 °C in July - with crisp cool nights, particularly at higher elevation. The landscape is fully accessible: snow-free trails wind through larch forests, the turquoise lakes such as Moraine Lake and Lake Louise shine under long daylight hours, and hikes up Sulphur Mountain reward with panoramic vistas. Canoeing, mountain biking, and guided wildlife cruises abound in the national park. Outdoor festivals and vibrant town-life in Banff townsite combine with alpine adventure. With peak load of visitors, early-morning starts, reservations for key trails and lookout planning make all the difference.

Autumn 2026
Autumn brings cooling air across Banff: September days may hover around 12-15 °C, but by November highs often drop to just a few degrees above freezing and frost becomes a regular guest. Larch trees turn golden in the high country, while the crowds thin and the tone of explorations shifts. Scenic drives along the Bow Valley and stops at Crow Foot Glacier or Lake Minnewanka become more serene. Hiking early-morning mist above waterfalls lends a mystical quality, and upper-elevation trails remain open until snow closes them. The quieter season invites leisure on the town’s terraces, gallery visits and photography of the mountains under softer, angled light.

Winter 2026/2027
Winter in Banff is cold, snowy and full of character: daytime highs often linger well below freezing, while overnight lows can fall beneath -15 °C, with wind-chill making conditions feel much colder. Snow blankets the slopes and the ice-skating surface of Lake Louise emerges; skiing, snow-shoeing and ice-wall climbs dominate. The town lights glow against snowy peaks, and activities such as the Ice Magic festival or a horse-drawn sleigh ride across frozen meadows add seasonal charm. With shorter days and longer shadows, visits benefit from sturdy winter gear and flexible scheduling, but the quiet forests, crisp air and snow-drenched landscapes reward the willing explorer.

5-Day Canada Summer Tour from Vancouver·Free Pick up | Bow Falls, Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, Grizzlies Town | Banff National Park

The Columbia Icefield adventure was the highlight of my trip. Riding the giant snowmobile was a unique experience I’ll never forget. The itinerary was well-paced, allowing us enough time at each lake without feeling rushed. The hotels were higher quality than I expected for a group tour. Truly a great value!

FAQs about Banff Tours

Do I need a park pass to visit Banff National Park?

Yes. A Banff National Park Pass is required for all visitors who stop, explore, hike, or stay in the town of Banff or anywhere inside the national park boundaries. This includes access to lakes, viewpoints and hiking areas. If you simply drive straight through on the Trans-Canada Highway without stopping, a pass isn’t needed. Many travelers buy passes ahead of time online to avoid lines at the park gates.

Can I visit Moraine Lake and Lake Louise without a car?

private vehicles are not allowed on Moraine Lake Road. Access is provided through Parks Canada shuttles, Roam Public Transit, and guided tours. The Parks Canada shuttle departs from the Lake Louise Ski Resort Park & Ride and serves both Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, with advance reservations strongly advised due to high demand. Roam Transit also runs seasonal routes from Banff town to Lake Louise, with a paid Lake Connector shuttle linking Lake Louise and Moraine Lake.

When is the best time to visit Banff for weather and crowds?

Summer (June-September) is the high season in Banff with warm weather, open lakes, and peak hiking and sightseeing conditions, making it the most popular time to visit. Shoulder seasons (spring and fall) offer fewer crowds and scenic views like fall colors, while winter (November-March/April) transforms Banff into a top ski and snow-activities destination. Banff National Park is open year-round, but activities and access vary by season.

Can I see wildlife in Banff and what rules apply?

Yes - wildlife such as elk, deer and even bears are regularly seen in Banff National Park. Feeding or approaching animals is illegal and fines apply, and wildlife behavior can be unpredictable. The safest viewing experience is from your vehicle or a safe distance with a zoom lens for photos. Respect posted closures and follow Parks Canada guidelines for wildlife safety.
