Best Avignon Tours & Trips

Located along the Rhône River, the French city was once called Vatican City as it was the home of seven popes from 1309-77 creating a schism in the Catholic Church. Avignon has preserved its papal legacy with Papal Palace and the fortifications constructed around it. Other points of interest are Avignon Cathedral, Avignon Bridge, Calvet Museum, Philippe le Bell Tower, St. Didier Church, Small Palace Museum-Avignon and Clock Square. Avignon's Historic Center, Papal Palace, Episcopal Ensemble and Avignon Bridge are designated as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. The city originated back in 4,000 BC.

Best Time to Visit Avignon

Summer 2026/2027
Summer is Avignon's most popular period for tourism, defined by intense heat, extreme dryness, and persistent sunshine. Daytime high temperatures frequently peak around 30°C to 34°C (86°F to 93°F), with heatwaves pushing temperatures even higher, making shade and hydration essential. Rainfall is minimal, guaranteeing highly reliable weather. The average temperature during this season is approximately 25°C (77°F). This season is dominated by the internationally famous Avignon Festival in July, which draws massive crowds and fills the city with theatrical performances. Outside of the festival, visitors explore the Palais des Papes and take relaxing boat trips on the Rhône.

Autumn 2026
Autumn is the ideal time to visit Avignon, providing a quick and welcome retreat from the summer's high heat while maintaining mild, pleasant temperatures. The average temperature during this season is approximately 17°C (63°F). The early part of the season is typically sunny and warm, ideal for extended outdoor exploration. Rainfall begins to increase towards November, which is often the wettest month, but sunny days remain frequent. This period is superb for exploring the local markets, visiting the Pont Saint-Bénézet (Pont d'Avignon), and taking scenic drives through the Provençal countryside to see the autumn colors, all with significantly fewer crowds than during the summer festival.

Winter 2026/2027
The winter climate in Avignon is mild and relatively short, but it is the season most affected by the cold, strong Mistral wind that funnels down the Rhône Valley, making temperatures feel much colder. The average temperature during this season is approximately 6°C (43°F), with daytime highs typically hovering between 9°C and 12°C (48°F and 54°F). Snow is extremely rare. This is the quietest time for general tourism, offering travelers the lowest rates and a tranquil environment. It’s an ideal period for focusing on the vast, uncrowded interior of the Palais des Papes, visiting local museums, and enjoying the warm atmosphere of traditional Provençal restaurants.

Spring 2027
Spring is a beautiful and highly appealing time to visit, featuring a smooth transition to warm, bright, and highly comfortable weather before the summer intensity. Temperatures ascend quickly, with May and June feeling like early summer. The average temperature during this season is approximately 15°C (59°F), steadily rising as the season progresses. Rainfall is low, and sunshine hours increase dramatically, making conditions ideal for exploring the city walls and the surrounding area. The pleasant temperatures are perfect for cycling, visiting the nearby vineyards, and enjoying the blooming flowers of Provence, making this a highly recommended time for comfortable sightseeing.

7-Day Summer Italy, Switzerland, and France Loop Tour: Paris, Lucerne, Milan, Venice, Rome, Florence, Nice

My friend and I had an incredible time on this tour. Lucerne was a beautiful introduction to Switzerland, and I loved seeing Chapel Bridge and Lake Lucerne. Milan's Duomo was impressive, Venice was unforgettable, and ending the trip in Paris made it even more special.

9-Day Europe Highlights Tour from Paris: Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Versailles, Lucerne, Milan, Rome, Cannes

The trip was absolutely amazing overall. I joined as a solo traveler and felt very safe the whole time. The highlight for me was definitely the Eiffel Tower at night and the short stop in Lucerne was like a dream. The itinerary is quite packed but well organized. Hotels were clean and comfortable. Only small issue was some long driving hours between cities, but that’s expected for a multi-country tour.

Impressed by Professionalism

We were fortunate to have Mr. Henry Chen as our guide. Despite his young age, Mr. Chen was exceptionally attentive, considering various issues comprehensively and enthusiastically helping everyone solve various problems encountered during the journey. With his extensive professional knowledge, he humorously introduced the local customs, history, and culture at each stop. In just seven days, Mr. Chen's professionalism, service attitude, level of service, and dedication left a lasting impression on us. We look forward to the next trip and the chance to meet Mr. Chen again.

FAQs about Avignon Tours

What is the best time of year to visit Avignon to avoid crowds and high prices?

Visit Avignon between September and November or from March to May. These shoulder seasons offer mild weather, fewer tourists, and lower accommodation rates. July brings the famous Avignon Festival and peak crowds. Avoid mid-July to early August if you prefer quieter streets and cooler temperatures.

How do I get from Marseille Provence Airport to Avignon quickly and affordably?

Take the shuttle bus (Bus Verts du Vaucluse Line 49) directly to Avignon’s city center for €8 one-way. Alternatively, the TER train from Aix-en-Provence TGV station (reachable via shuttle) takes 30 minutes to Avignon Centre. A taxi costs €90–110. The shuttle offers the best balance of speed and value.

Is the Avignon City Pass worth it for a 2-day visit?

Yes, the Avignon City Pass covers entry to the Palais des Papes, Pont d’Avignon, and over 10 museums, plus unlimited public transport. At €30 for 48 hours, it pays for itself after 2–3 attractions. Skip-the-line access saves time, especially in high season. Ideal for visitors planning to explore major historic sites efficiently.

What should I know about the mistral wind in Avignon and how does it affect travel plans?

The mistral, a strong, cold northwesterly wind, occurs most often in winter and spring, averaging 100 days per year. It can disrupt outdoor activities and dining. Pack a windproof jacket and secure loose outdoor items. While it may interfere with comfort, it also clears skies, leading to crisp, sunny days perfect for photography and sightseeing.
