The New York City bridge spanning the East River was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it was completed in 1903 connecting Manhattan's Lower East Side with Brooklyn. The Williamsburg Bridge runs 7,308 feet long carrying vehicular, pedestrian, bicycle and railway traffic on eight lanes and two tracks. It was designed by architect Henry Hornbostel and chief engineer Leffert Buck. The Williamsburg Bridge carries approximately 140,000 motorists, 92,000 transit riders, 600 bikers and 500 pedestrians daily from Manhattan to Brooklyn.
