Waterloo, outside the town of the same name, was one of Europe’s bloodiest battles, resulting in the deaths of 32,000 people and changing the course of history. The Lion’s Mound of Waterloo, an artificial hill, was erected on the main 1815 battlefield site, aka "Lion Hamlet," and its 225 steps can be climbed by visitors. It is crowned by a massive bronze lion commemorating William of Orange who was wounded on this spot while co-commanding Allied troops.
