Constructed by architect Flaminio Ponzio, the Borghese Villa was the personal villa of Scipione Borghese where he hosted social gatherings and housed his artwork. Originally one of his vineyards, he redesigned the area into a lavish garden that was later remodeled into a 19th English landscape style featuring the Temple of Aesculapius beside a man-made lake as well as several villas, including the original one. The villa itself houses the Galleria Borghese which hosts classical and neo-classical artwork, and sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Antonio Canova.
