The Trinity Church located in Manhattan, New York, was built in 1846 and continues to be an operating and historical church. The Trinity Church had been in the works originally since 1696, when Governor Benjamin Fletcher approved the purchase of land (which is now lower Manhattan), for construction of a church. The first Trinity Church was built in 1698, and later perished in the Great New York City Fire of 1776, which destroyed nearly 500 buildings. The Trinity Church was rebuilt in 1788, but was torn down in 1839 after being weakened by snow storms. The third and current Trinity Church was finished in 1846 and was designed by architect Richard Upjohn.
