Best Tihany Abbey Day Trips & Things to Do

Hungarian King Andrew I founded this abbey in 1055 as he chose what is now the village of Tihany as his final resting place. He was buried in the monastery's church in 1060 and the abbey was donated to Benedictine monks. Tihany Abbey was rebuilt during the 18th century as it was destroyed following a Habsburgs' decree and then ruined by fire. The abbey, which features amazing frescoes, remains a symbol of Tihany and attracts many tourists. In addition to an adjoining museum, its property contains a farmstead and granary.
