The Great Geysir Tours

Best The Great Geysir Tours & Trips

Considered the first geyser known to modern Europeans and where the term geyser comes from, the Great Geysir in Southern Iceland forms the Golden Circle with Thingvellir and Gullfoss. Though it has been active for nearly 10,000 years, the Geysir erupts much more infrequently than its neighbor Strokkur. However, its highest recorded height is 70 meters (229 feet), topping Geysir's height of 60 meters, and on average it fountains higher than Strokkur.

7-Day Best of Iceland Tour from Reykjavik·Waterfalls, Glaciers, Geysers and Black Beaches

The tour leader was great, personable, knowledgeable and flexible where he could be. Weather and the sites were outstanding. I particularly liked that we took in a number of places that were a little more remote and less traveled by tour buses (ie. East Fjords), so the volume of visitors was relatively low. Overall is was a great trip, with outstanding weather, and it provided an excellent overview of Iceland, it's variety of landscapes and unique culture.

FAQs about The Great Geysir Tours

How do I get from Reykjavik to the Geysir geothermal area in Iceland?

Drive the 1.5 hours via the Ring Road (Route 1) east to Route 35 near Laugarvatn. Exit at Haukadalur Valley - well-signposted and easily accessible by car or bus. Regular guided tours and public buses (like Strætó line 51) also operate daily from Reykjavik to Geysir, especially in peak seasons.

What time should I visit Geysir to avoid crowds and see eruptions?

Visit early (6-8 AM) or late evening (8-10 PM) to avoid tour groups. Strokkur, the active geyser, erupts every 5-10 minutes, shooting water up to 20-30 meters. Crowds thin outside midday hours, and natural light enhances photography at sunrise or sunset.

Is there an entrance fee to visit the Geysir geothermal area?

No, access to the Geysir geothermal area is free. While the nearby Geysir Center offers restrooms, food, and shopping, entry to see Strokkur and surrounding hot springs requires no ticket. Always stay on marked paths for safety and environmental protection.

Are there hiking trails near Geysir, and what should I wear?

Yes, short trails wind through the Haukadalur Valley with boardwalks around hot springs. Wear waterproof hiking boots and layered clothing - weather shifts rapidly. Even in summer, bring a windproof jacket and gloves due to steam, wind, and unpredictable rain in Iceland’s highlands.
