Best The Conciergerie Tours in Winter

Located on the banks of the River Seine, the Conciergerie is the oldest remaining part of the first royal palace in Paris. Constructed to house the French royal family, it was converted into a prison in the late 14th century. During the French Revolution, it became known as death's waiting room as thousands of prisoners were sentenced to the guillotine. Its troubled history contrasts with its palatial appearance, featuring marvelous medieval dining halls as well as dank dungeons. Marie Antionette famously spent her last weeks here before execution. Her prison cell remains.
