Question 1

What is the best time of year to visit Shangri-La?

Accepted Answer

Visit Shangri-La between May and early June or September and October. These periods offer stable weather, clear skies, and fewer tourists. The monsoon season runs from July to August, bringing frequent rain, while winter months (November–March) are very cold, with some attractions limited due to snow.

Question 2

How do I get from Shangri-La Airport to Dukezong Old Town?

Accepted Answer

Take a taxi from Diqing Shangri-La Airport (DIG) to Dukezong Old Town – it’s about 5 km and costs 20–30 CNY. Ride-hailing apps like Didi operate here. Public buses (Route 1) also run between the airport and town for around 2 CNY, but depart less frequently. Taxis are the most direct and time-efficient option.

Question 3

Is altitude sickness a risk in Shangri-La, and how can I prevent it?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Shangri-La sits at 3,300 meters, so altitude sickness is common. Arrive gradually if possible, avoid alcohol and heavy exertion upon arrival, drink plenty of water, and consider taking Diamox as a preventive. Rest upon arrival and stay at lower-elevation accommodations like those near Dukezong’s base for easier acclimatization.

Question 4

Are there any local permits or restrictions I need to know before visiting Shangri-La?

Accepted Answer

Foreign travelers need a Tibet Travel Permit to visit Tibet, but Shangri-La is in Yunnan and requires no special permit. However, if planning to travel onward to Tibet, arrange permits in advance through a licensed tour agency. No internal restrictions exist for Shangri-La, but carry ID for routine police checks on highways.
