Resting just northwest of Sonora, Puerto Penasco sits on the strip of land that connects Baja California to mainland Mexico and is considered "Arizona's Beach" because it is the closest beach to Phoenix. Popular due to it's pristine, clear beaches that have felt little commercial development over the 20th century, but there are currently projects to expand hotels, condos, and resorts near the coast. The area is extremely popular for fisherman, and there is even a fishing festival hosted on Navy Day, or June 1st.
