This town located at the mouth of the Estuary of Bilbao is one of the more attractive in the Bilbao metropolitan area. Portugalete, which despite its name is not near the Spanish border with Portugal, was once a rival of Bilbao in terms of importance and today is most known for the UNESCO World Heritage Site Vizcaya Bridge, a transport bridge where the car ferry is suspended from a frame by wires attached to wheels on tracks above the cabin.
