Situated at the end of the Champs-Elysees and along the River Seine, this popular tourist destination is the largest public square in Paris. Place de la Concorde was designed in 1755 by Ange-Jacques Gabriel and originally named Place Louis XV for France's king. During the French Revolution from 1789-99, it was renamed Place de la Revolution. French leaders and royalty executed there by a giant guillotine include King Louis XVI, Queen Marie Antoinette, Princess Elisabeth, Madame du Barry, Antoine Lavoisier, Maximilien Robespierre, Louis de Saint-Just and Olympe de Gouges. Notable monuments within the square that received its current name in 1795 are the Obelisk of Luxor, Fountain of the Rivers and the Maritime Fountain.
