Best Our Lady Of Covadonga Tours & Trips

This Marian shrine in the northwest province of Asturias is devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our Lady of Covadonga rose to prominence following the Battle of Covadon in 722 where the Moorish invasion of Spain was initially resisted. A statue of the Virgin Mary was secretly hidden in a cave and believed to have miraculously aided the Christian victory. A basilica was built to house this statue, which Pope John Paul II once visited to honor the Virgin Mary.

Fantastic Value for Money!

I was pleasantly surprised by what this tour offered! Staying in 3-5 star hotels, enjoying meals like the welcome tapas dinner, and the free airport transfer were great perks. Every city we visited showcased the best of Spain and Portugal. The guided city tours were particularly informative and enjoyable. This tour is definitely worth every penny—I'll be recommending it to my friends!

FAQs about Our Lady Of Covadonga Tours

How do I get from Oviedo to the Sanctuary of Covadonga and what is the best transportation option?

Take a bus from Oviedo’s Plaza de la Escandalera to Cangas de Onís (1.5 hours), then transfer to a local bus or minivan to the Sanctuary (30 mins). Driving allows flexibility, especially for the steep ascent. Bus services operate seasonally - check ALSA and Transportes Díaz for current schedules.

Is the Sanctuary of Covadonga accessible during winter, and are there any road closures?

The Sanctuary is accessible year-round, but the mountain road (CA-11) may close temporarily due to ice or snow. Check local traffic updates via the Asturias government website. Winter visitors should carry tire chains and monitor weather conditions before driving.

Are there entrance fees or required tickets to visit the Basilica at the Sanctuary of Covadonga?

No entrance fee is charged to visit the Basilica or Santa Cueva. Donations are welcome. Guided tours of the religious complex are free but may require advance registration during peak seasons like the National Holiday on September 8.

What local customs or dress codes should visitors follow at the Sanctuary of Covadonga?

Visitors should dress modestly - shoulders and knees covered - inside the Basilica and Santa Cueva. Silence is expected in sacred areas. Attend Mass or light candles as a sign of respect. Photography is allowed except during religious services.
