A geological wonder, Ometepe Island is formed by two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua and connected by an isthmus, or land bridge. Hike up to San Ramon waterfall on its hilly, well-marked trail, or saunter around the banana plantations on the isthmus. Ancient peoples carved more than 1,700 petroglyphs into boulders and rock faces on the island, making it a perfect destination for curious explorers. The island's most important town, Altagracia, is suffused with the culture of the local indigenous people, and many customs and traditions have survived here that you do not see in other parts of Nicaragua anymore.
