The seat of the federal executive of Mexico City, the National Palace is located in Mexico City's main square, Zocalo. The National Palace was originally the palace for the ruling class of Mexico since the Aztec empire and is currently used as a government building. The National Palace is made up of, what is refereed to as Moctezuma II's "New Houses." Moctezuma II was the ninth ruler of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, which was originally the city of Mexico City. The New Houses were five inter-connected palaces that's bricks were used to build the current National Palace.
