A shallow lake not far from the Kratfla Volcano, Myvatn comprises a unique and diverse landscape of hot springs, lava pillars, wetlands, islands. This complex landscape formed from a series of frequent volcanic eruptions in the region that formed the shores and islands of the lake, which itself is leftover water from the melting of a large glacier at the end of the last ice age. The nutrient rich spring water supports much of the local birdlife and the wide variety of ducks that live here.
