The mainly French-speaking architectural jewel located along the St. Lawrence River is the second largest city in Canada and named after its 761-foot hill Mount Royal. Montreal was a French colony until 1760 when Great Britain gained rule over the city that was incorporated in 1832. Notable sites are Mount Royal, Old Montreal, Montreal Botanical Gardens, Montreal Biodome, Notre-Dame de Montreal Basilica, Place Jacques Cartier, Olympic Stadium and its tower, St. Joseph's Oratory and Montreal City Hall.
