Linking Lower Manhattan with Brooklyn, this 6,855-foot New York City suspension bridge carries 450,000 commuters across the East River with seven motor vehicle lanes, four subway lanes and a bicycle and pedestrian path. The Manhattan Bridge was designed by Leon Moisseiff and opened in 1909. Architectural firm Carrère and Hastings created an ornate arched entrance with a colonnade on the Manhattan side of the bridge several years later.
