The city of Lead is located in the Black Hills in western South Dakota. The city founded in 1876 after gold was discovered, later building the Homestake Mine, one of the largest gold mines in the Western Hemisphere. The Homestake Mining Company made Lead a company town; the mine was closed in 2002.
