Originally named Vermilionville during its founding in 1921, the city was later renamed Lafayette in honor of French General Lafayette who fought alongside U.S. forces in the American Revolutionary War. Considered the center of Acadiana - the French region Louisiana during colonial times - the city also features Cajun and Creole influence.
