Best Grand Canyon South Rim Tours & Trips

80 miles north of Flagstaff is the scenic Grand Canyon South Rim, the most popular side of the canyon. Receiving over 5 million visitors a year, the southern rim is the perfect spot to watch the sunrise over the Grand Canyon East Rim from Mather or Yaki Point. Or one can head over to Desert View Point to see the picturesque Watchtower, a historical recreation of an ancient tower that once stood over the canyon, and another pristine spot to receive a panoramic view of the canyon. There are a handful of hotels in Flagstaff or the nearby small town of Tusayan, but a trip from Las Vegas is manageable.

FAQs about Grand Canyon South Rim Tours

How do I avoid crowds at Grand Canyon South Rim?

Visit early morning or late evening when day-trippers are fewer. Hike below the rim on trails like Bright Angel or South Kaibab to escape congestion. Weekdays and winter months see fewer visitors. Consider entering via the less crowded Backcountry Information Center trailhead.

What’s the best way to get from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon South Rim?

Drive (4.5 hours) via US-93 and I-40 for flexibility. Alternatively, take a Greyhound bus to Flagstaff, then an Arizona Shuttle or rental car. Flights to Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) followed by shuttle are faster but costlier. Avoid relying on direct public transit.

Is the Grand Canyon shuttle free in 2024, and does it run year-round?

Yes, the park’s internal shuttle system is free and runs year-round. The Kaibab Rim and Village Routes operate daily with increased frequency in peak seasons. Shuttles connect major viewpoints, lodges, and trailheads without private vehicle access.

When is the rainy season at Grand Canyon South Rim, and how does it affect hiking?

Monsoon season runs from July to mid-September, bringing afternoon thunderstorms and flash flood risks. Trails like Bright Angel may close temporarily. Check with the Backcountry Office daily. Carry rain gear and avoid narrow canyons during storms.
