Best Governors Island Tours & Trips

Originally a military base closed to the public for nearly 200 years, 150 acres of the 172-acre island in New York Harbor was sold by the federal government to New York city and state in 2003. The rest of the land is operated by the National Park Service as a landmark. The newly renovated park contains the six-acre landscaped Liggett Terrace plaza that will display public art, the 14-acre Play Lawn including two ball fields and the 10-acre Hammock Grove consisting of 50 hammocks, 1,500 newly planted trees and numerous play areas. The Hills section is currently under construction to be 10 acres ascending various heights above the island to provide a 360 degree view of New York Harbor, The Statue of Liberty and Manhattan.
