The second largest Baroque palace in the world behind the Palace of Versailles is this Godollo landmark that Austrian Emperor and Hungarian King Franz Joseph I and his wife Elisabeth used as their summer residence. Godollo Palace was commissioned by aristocrat Antal Grassalkovich I in 1735. It was purchased by the Hungarian State in 1867, remodeled and presented to Franz Joseph I as a coronation gift. The 8-winged palace contains a chapel, theater, royal apartments, bath house, riding hall, stables and an arboretum. It features an extensive permanent exhibition in 31 galleries as well as seasonal displays.
