Best Dunkeld Tours & Trips

One of the best preserved towns in Scotland, Dunkeld offers breathtaking surroundings, a vibrant arts and music scene, and unique shops and galleries. Situated in Perthshire on the River Tay, Dunkeld dates back to the 6th century when a monastery was built here. Dunkeld has a rich history but it burnt down in 1689 during the Battle of Dunkeld. Dunkeld Cathedral, which is still on the banks of the Tay today, was built in the 12th century and added to over the next few hundred years, making its architecture unique. It also has a Cathedral Museum with interesting artifacts.

FAQs about Dunkeld Tours

How do I get from Edinburgh to Dunkeld, and what’s the most scenic route?

Take the A9 north from Edinburgh to Dunkeld - it’s approximately 90 minutes by car. For a scenic alternative, drive via the B8079 through Perthshire’s Highland border, passing wooded glens and the River Tay. Public transport users can take a train to Perth, then a bus (No. 23 or X23) directly to Dunkeld.

What is the best time of year to visit Dunkeld to avoid heavy rainfall?

The driest months in Dunkeld are April through June, with average rainfall below 70mm. Avoid October to January, when Perthshire experiences peak precipitation. Summer offers milder conditions, but pack a rain jacket regardless - sudden showers are common even in July and August.

Are there any local heritage passes that include entry to Dunkeld Cathedral and nearby historic sites?

Yes, the Historic Environment Scotland (HES) Explorer Pass covers Dunkeld Cathedral and nearby sites like Doune Castle and Blair Castle. The pass is valid for 5, 7, or 14 days and offers unlimited access. Purchase online or at major HES properties; children under 5 enter free.

Is Dunkeld accessible during the winter months, and are roads typically clear of snow?

Dunkeld is accessible year-round, but winter travel requires caution. The A9 is regularly gritted, but minor roads in surrounding Perthshire hills may have snow delays from December to February. Check Traffic Scotland updates, and consider winter tires if traveling during cold snaps, especially for northbound journeys.
