Home to five universities and the first Christian church of Iowa, Dubuque was officially founded in 1835, but was settled by Julien Dubuque in 1785 to mine the regions lead deposits, the funds of which would later pass to subsequent settlers. Due to the high volume of European immigrants over the centuries, the town grew as an industrial center in Iowa, but today the major industries included tourism, technology, and publishing. Located along the Mississippi River, the town features a variety of museums, casinos, and the famous House on the Rock.
