Located about 160 mi (250 km) from Havana, Cuba and known as the Pearl of the South, Cienfuegos is a city on the southern coast of Cuba and capital of Cienfuegos Province. Near the entrance to the bay is Castillo de Jagua, a fortress built in 1745 to defend the city against Caribbean pirates.
