Originally a large pre-Columbian city built by the Mayans, Chichen Itza is an archaeological site located in Yucatan, Mexico. The site was a major focal point in the northern Maya lowlands from the Late Classic period to the Terminal Classic, and even part of the Early Postclassic period. Chichen Itza was one of the largest Maya cities and its structure and layout is believed to date back between 750 and 900 A.D. The architecture of the city exhibits styles of the Maya lowlands, such as central Mexican, Puuc and Chenes. Chichen Itza is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico, receiving an average of 1.2 visitors every year.
