Best Chichen Itza Tours & Trips

Originally a large pre-Columbian city built by the Mayans, Chichen Itza is an archaeological site located in Yucatan, Mexico. The site was a major focal point in the northern Maya lowlands from the Late Classic period to the Terminal Classic, and even part of the Early Postclassic period. Chichen Itza was one of the largest Maya cities and its structure and layout is believed to date back between 750 and 900 A.D. The architecture of the city exhibits styles of the Maya lowlands, such as central Mexican, Puuc and Chenes. Chichen Itza is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico, receiving an average of 1.2 visitors every year.

The Magnificent History Of Ancient Chichen Itza Awaits You

Located in Yucatan State, Mexico, Chichen Itza’s modern history began when John Lloyd Stephens wrote about its fascinating presence in his book recounting his travels to the Yucatan. Chichen Itza was a sprawling city built by the Mayans in the centuries before the arrival of Columbus. Its name means “at the mouth of the well of the Itza people” and it is a shining example of the mighty civilization that once thrived in the region.

Dominating the Chichen Itza site is El Castillo, or Temple of the Kukulcan. Standing at a total of 99 feet high it has exactly 365 steps. El Castillo was built around the 19th and 12th century CE as a temple to Kukulcan, the Feathered Serpent Deity. If you plan your visit around the equinoxes in spring and autumn (mid-March and mid-September respectively), you are sure to catch a glimpse of the illusion of a feathered serpent slithering down the steps of the temple! On its own, it is well worth the Chichen Itza entrance fee of roughly USD 13, often included with a Chichen Itza tour.

Other notable Chichen Itza pyramids, temples and structures include:
• The Platform Of Venus – actually two separate platforms for offerings to the gods; one found in the Great Plaza and the other near to the Grave of the High Priest
• The Upper and Lower Temples of the Jaguar showing intricate details of carvings, some of which still have the original paint on them
• The Skull Platform – decorated all around with skulls, eagles and snakes
• The Temple of the Warriors – an imposing structure with numerous carved columns adjoining it
• El Caracol Observatory which is thought to have been built specifically to observe the path of the planet Venus as it moves across the heavens
• Cenote Ik Kil de Chichen Itza – one of many sinkholes found in the Yucatan region. This beautiful gem is a popular stop for bus tours to the area. A highlight of any Chichen Itza tour, visitors get the chance to swim in Ik Kil whose surface is about 85 ft. below ground level.

At its height, Chichen Itza was one of the mythical great cities in Maya history and also one of the largest. It hosted a diverse mix of cultures which is reflected in the remnants of the city even today. Certainly, these many different peoples would have gathered at any of the 13 ballcourts at Chichen Itza. The most impressive one, by far, is the Great Ball Court just west to El Castillo.

If you wish to visit the beautifully preserved Mayan ruin, Cancun is the perfect place to start your tour which is sure to feature some exciting Cancun activities as well. How about an ATV and speed boat tour of the exotic Maroma Beach? You can also go snorkeling in an underground river or in the pristine waters of the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Cancun.

If you’re looking to fit Chichen Itza into your relaxing Cancun vacation, you’re probably wondering how far is Chichen Itza from Cancun? It’s a lush and scenic 2 and a quarter hours away. Join a day trip to the ruins and you will be taken there in maximum comfort and style. Many of the wonderful multi-day Mexico vacation package that take you from Cancun to Chichen Itza also go to other famous sites and locations.

These include:
• The White City of Merida
• the town and ruins of Palenque
• San Cristobal de las Casas and its unique blend of indigenous cultures
• Lake Atitlán and the town of Panajachel in Guatemala
• San Ignacio in Belize

Best Time to Visit Chichen Itza

Winter 2026/2027
Winter at Chichén Itzá means the driest and most comfortable period: daytime highs typically range from around 30-31 °C and nights drop to the 18-20 °C range - still warm, but humidity is lower and skies often clearer. Rainfall is at its lowest, making this season ideal for open-air exploration. At sunrise the pyramid’s angles cast sharp shadows, the Great Plaza feels expansive and visitors can pause longer between sites. Nearby cenotes remain inviting and local markets outside the main zone bustle with seasonal festivals. With stable weather, guided tours along the northern temples relax into a steady rhythm. Though heat and UV remain factors, the combination of clear skies, comfortable conditions and fewer interruptions makes winter a preferred window for full-day visits and immersive archaeological discovery.

Spring 2026
From March through May the region around Chichén Itzá hosts warm, tropical conditions: daytime highs climb from roughly 30-32 °C in March toward 34-35 °C in May, while nights are milder near 18-23 °C. Rainfall remains relatively light in March and April, then builds in May as the wet season approaches. With humidity rising and the heat settling in, visiting the Pyramid of Kukulcán at dawn or exploring the Sacred Cenote before noon offers more comfortable light. The lush jungle setting comes alive: bird-calls echo among stone carvings and the early season crowd levels are more manageable. Afternoon visits to the ball court or the Nunnery complex feel brighter under warm skies, and exploring nearby cenotes such as Ik-Kil adds refreshing contrast.

Summer 2026
Summer around Chichén Itzá means high heat and increasing rainfall: daytime highs stay around 34-36 °C (93-97 °F) or higher, overnight lows near 23-25 °C, and humidity climbs significantly. The wet season is fully underway by June, with heavy tropical showers and thunderstorms that can affect open-ruin access and midday comfort. Despite the challenges, this is a time of vibrant jungle backdrop: the Kukulcán pyramid shines after afternoon showers, light filters through palm fronds, and visiting late afternoon offers a dramatic atmosphere as clouds gather above the Great Plaza. Early-morning treks between columns or low-light photography at the Observatory gain depth, while nearby town festivals bring local colour. Staying hydrated, taking shaded breaks and embracing the slower pace suit this season best.

Autumn 2026
In autumn the weather gradually transitions: daytime temperatures drift from the low 30s °C in September toward the late 20s °C and even mid-20s °C by November, with evenings cooling modestly. Rainfall remains high early in the season - September is often the wettest month - then steadily declines toward November as the dry season returns. This shift brings a calmer, lush atmosphere at Chichén Itzá. The tropical foliage glows under softened light and fewer tour groups create a quieter feel. Exploring the Sacred Cenote or climbing the El Castillo pyramid in the gentler afternoon offers renewed clarity. Evening visits align with receding storms and crisp wind, and nearby heritage towns like Valladolid offer pleasant day outings. Wildlife around the ruins becomes more active as humidity eases, and the mix of warm weather and thinning rain produces a favourable balance.
