Best Centennial Flame Day Trips & Things to Do

This flickering natural gas flame encircled by a fountain atop Ottawa's Parliament Hill was created for Canada's 100th anniversary as a Confederation and first lit on Jan. 1, 1967. Centennial Flame's fountain has the names of the country's provinces and territories inscribed on it and was originally meant to be temporary, but Canadian public wanted to keep it. Many visitors throw coins in the fountain believing it will bring them good luck and the money is gathered up and presented to the recipient of the annual Centennial Flame Research Award.
