Legend has it that in the 17th century a Spanish ship called the Candelaria was besieged by storm and, upon praying that they would establish a church if they survived, the crew were able to reach Rio de Janeiro. Thus, the crew sponsored a project to build a chapel named Candelaria. Today the church stands in Rio and its architectural design is a combination of Baroque, Neoclassical, and Neo-Renaissance.
