Best Time to Visit Bologna

Winter 2026
Winter in Bologna is cold, damp, and often foggy, a typical feature of the Po Valley climate. Average daytime highs hover between a chilly 5°C and 9°C (41°F and 48°F), with nighttime temperatures frequently dropping to or below the freezing point of 0°C (32°F). Snowfall is not uncommon, adding a picturesque charm to the medieval architecture, while the high humidity can make the cold feel more intense. This is the period of the lowest visitor numbers, allowing for an intimate, uncrowded experience of the city’s indoor attractions, such as museums and art galleries. The covered porticoes offer practical protection from the rain and cold. It is an excellent time to enjoy the city’s rich, warming, traditional cuisine.

Spring 2026
Spring sees a rapid and welcome transformation from the winter chill to beautifully warm and comfortable conditions, making it a very popular time to visit. Temperatures ascend from a cool high of 15°C (59°F) in March to a delightful 22°C to 25°C (72°F to 77°F) by May. While March and April can still see unpredictable weather and rain, the season is generally characterized by increasing sunshine and blooming flowers in the parks and gardens. The pleasant weather is perfect for extensive walking and climbing the famous towers. The combination of mild temperatures and an already vibrant local scene, driven by the large student population, makes for an energetic and enjoyable atmosphere before the full summer heat arrives.

Summer 2026
Summer in Bologna is marked by hot and notably humid conditions with consistently high temperatures. Daily highs often peak between 30°C and 34°C (86°F and 93°F), occasionally climbing higher. The humidity, common in the Po Valley, makes the air feel particularly muggy. This is the main time for outdoor activities, benefiting from clear skies and long hours of sunshine, though the intense heat can be challenging during midday. The city is lively with festivals, and many restaurants offer outdoor dining under the porticoes, which also provide necessary shade. It is important to note that many locals take their holidays in August, leading to some businesses, particularly food shops and restaurants, closing for part of the month.

Autumn 2026
Autumn is widely considered one of the most delightful times to visit, offering a quick transition to pleasant, mild weather that is ideal for exploration. The intense summer heat subsides rapidly, with temperatures dropping from a warm 25°C to 28°C (77°F to 82°F) in September to a mild 16°C to 19°C (61°F to 66°F) by November. This season is the rainiest of the year, with the highest chances of precipitation occurring in October and November. However, the mild temperatures and the beautiful colors of the changing foliage create a picturesque setting for wandering the city's extensive network of historic porticoes. This period is also famed for its local culinary celebrations, including the start of the truffle and chestnut seasons, appealing strongly to food enthusiasts.

5-Day Italy City Break Tour from Rome: Florence, Bologna and Venice

The perfect Italian escape!

What an incredible week! From start to finish, everything ran smoothly. The motorcoach was comfortable, and the transfers were always on time. I really liked the balance between guided sightseeing and free time—especially in Florence, where we had space to wander and shop a bit. The food was another highlight. That Tuscan lunch with local wine in Montepulciano was heavenly, and I still dream about the pasta in Bologna. Venice was the cherry on top—walking across the Bridge of Sighs at sunset felt surreal. Honestly, for a short trip, this covered so much ground without ever feeling chaotic. Worth every penny.

8-Day Discovery of Italy Tour from Rome with Airport Transfers: Florence, Bologna and Venice | Hop-On Hop-Off | Vatican Museums: Skip the Line

Worth every moment and every euro

This trip packed so much into 8 days and somehow never felt overwhelming. The airport transfer was seamless, which is always a relief when arriving in Rome after a long flight. The guides were top-notch, balancing history with local stories that brought the cities alive. I especially loved Siena and Padua, two places I never would have visited on my own. The bus rides were scenic and restful, the meals included were high quality (especially the Tuscan lunch with wine!), and the hotels were very comfortable. Ending the trip with a Vatican Museums skip-the-line tour was the perfect finale. Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better way to experience Italy’s highlights without the stress of planning everything myself.

23-Day Landscapes of Spain & Italy Tour from Madrid: Merida, Seville, Cordoba, Granada, Ubeda, Valencia, Barcelona, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Siena, Perugia, Assis, Rome | Welcome/Farewell Dinner | Daily Breakfast

I had such an amazing time on the 23-day tour! The cities we visited were stunning—Barcelona’s architecture and Venice’s canals were highlights for sure! The daily breakfasts were solid, and I loved the typical "Aperitivo" experience in Siena—it really felt authentic Our tour director was wonderful, keeping us engaged and entertained throughout. I'll cherish the memories from this trip forever!
