Sunlight enters the Blue Grotto via an underwater cavity that is refracted through the water and combined with the reflection of light off the white sand of the seafloor produces the grotto’s otherworldly blue light. The Roman Emperor Tiberius, who called Capri home, built a quay in the cave around 30 AD and its landing stage can still be seen to this day.
