Best Baltra Island Tours & Trips

Also called South Seymour Island, this small Galapagos island is the location of Seymour Airport and two docks. Baltra Island originated as a United States Army Air Force base during World War II after U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited it in the 1930s. After the war ended, control of the island was transferred to Ecuador and the country's military still maintains a base there. Most visitors to the Galapagos travel via Baltra Island to reach the rest of the islands.

FAQs about Baltra Island Tours

What is the best way to get from Baltra Island to Santa Cruz in the Galápagos?

After landing at Seymour Airport on Baltra Island, follow signs to the 5-minute complimentary bus ride to the Itabaca Canal. Cross the channel by public ferry (approx. $5, payable in cash), then take a bus or taxi from the north shore for about 10 minutes to Puerto Ayora or inland areas of Santa Cruz. Taxis are metered and readily available.

Is there reliable ATC or currency exchange at Baltra Island’s airport?

There is no ATM or currency exchange at Baltra’s Seymour Airport. Bring sufficient USD cash from the mainland—cards are not accepted for ferry crossings or small transfers. A small ATM inside the airport may intermittently work; verify with your bank. Plan to withdraw cash upon arrival in Puerto Ayora.

What should travelers know about Baltra’s climate and packing essentials?

Baltra has a warm, arid climate with temperatures from 70–86°F (21–30°C) yearly. The hot season (December–May) brings brief rain; the garúa (cool) season (June–November) is misty and drier. Pack lightweight clothing, sun protection, water shoes, a light jacket for evenings, and reef-safe sunscreen.

Are there any entry requirements or transit cards needed when arriving at Baltra Island?

All visitors to Baltra must pay a $20 INGALA migration control card fee (cash, USD only) and present a valid Galápagos Transit Control Card, purchased online in advance for $20 via www.galapagostransit.com. Without these, you may be denied boarding or entry upon arrival.
