More than 1,100 animals representing more than 250 species reside in this 133-acre zoo with 800-plus plant species in Griffith Park in Los Angeles. Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens opened in 1966, which was the same year the The Griffith Park Zoo - located a few miles away - closed having been in existence since 1912. Zoo highlights include Rainforest of the Americas, The LAIR (Living Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Reptiles), Elephants of Asia, Campo Gorilla Reserve, Sea Life Cliffs, Australia, Red Ape Rain Forest, Chimpanzees of Mahale Mountains, Dragons of Komodo, Winnick Family Children’s Zoo and Unique Animals. More than 1.5 million people visit the zoo annually.
