Best Reykjavik Tours & Trips

See the world’s most northerly capital. Reykjavik is a small, low-rise city framed by snow-capped mountains where geothermal pools are dotted throughout the city. It is also the center of all things Iceland, a vibrant city brimming with cafes, pubs and clubs, world-class restaurants, quality museums and galleries, and one of the best music scenes to be found anywhere in Europe. The National Museum should not be missed, as it displays artifacts from the settlement of Iceland all the way up to the modern age, including Viking swords and drinking horns.

8 Best Places to See the Northern Lights in Europe 2026
8 Best Places to See the Northern Lights in Europe 2026
The Northern Lights seem to be a distant dream that belongs to winter, and few natural phenomena can be as attractive as they are. This dazzling displ

Hello, Reykjavik!

Beyond Reykjavik

Beyond Reykjavik

After you've had your fill of Reykjavik tours, get out of the city and discover the real - or surreal - and rugged Iceland. A world-famous Icelandic destination is the Blue Lagoon. It’s a great choice for day trips from Reykjavik being only 50 minutes away by car or bus. Sure, it has gotten a bit of a reputation as a tourist trap but it is beautiful and the experience, extraordinary. Take a trip to the Blue Lagoon - tickets are often included with Reykjavik tours - and cap it off with a silica mud mask and a dip in the relaxing geothermal waters.

If you’re feeling adventurous, then maybe Reykjavik glacier tours are just what you’re looking for. There are glacier tours that can take you on and around the icy wonders but a trip to Langjökull, Iceland’s second largest glacier, means a trip into inside it. It’s a truly unique adventure.

A Golden Circle tour is a classic among Reykjavik excursions. It’s a popular circuit for tourists to travel. Whether you’re on a super limited time - you can make a day trip out of it - or if you have the time for a multi-day Iceland tour, the Golden Circle is a neat way to see three of the most famous landmarks within 60 miles of Reykjavik: the Þingvellir, a national park of great historic and geological importance; the geysers Geysir and Strokkur at Haukadalur; and Gullfoss or Golden Falls.

Of the many Reykjavik excursions, Northern Lights tours are probably the most popular. The Aurora Borealis is always there but you must go hunting to get a better look at it. While Iceland enjoys the Northern Lights visibility roughly from September to April, finding them isn’t always a sure thing. “Hunters” are subject to the whims of the weather. The lights can be seen—although not very clearly—within the city but for the best experience, a drive or a cruise out of Reykjavik is highly recommended.

Last of the must-do trips out of Reykjavik is the South Coast Iceland tour. There are many natural attractions along the way: glaciers, waterfalls, and volcanoes. But the most vivid of them all is the Reynisfjara basalt sea stacks. Make sure you bring a camera because mist, fog, rain, or shine, they’re definitely picture-worthy.

Best Time to Visit Reykjavik

Winter 2026/2027
Winter in Reykjavík is defined by short daylight hours - just 4 to 5 in December - and cold, windy days: highs typically hover near 0 to 2 °C in January, with lows often dipping below -2 °C. Precipitation shifts from rain to snow more frequently, though heavy accumulation in the city is less common than inland. This is prime Northern-Lights season and Reykjavík becomes a base for aurora tours and crisp walks along the lit harbour, or geothermal-pool dips beneath twilight skies. Winter festivals like the Reykjavík Winter Lights bring warmth to the cultural scene, and side-trips to the Blue Lagoon or snow-shoeing in the Hengill area offer contrast to city-life. Though weather conditions demand layers and flexibility, the quiet, dramatic winter light reveals an atmospheric side of the capital few seasons offer.

Spring 2026
In Reykjavík, spring ushers in gradually warming days and long daylight stretches: daytime highs climb from around 3-6 °C in March toward 9-10 °C by May, while nights remain near or just above freezing. Rainfall declines from winter peaks and snow fades from city-streets, though wind remains a constant factor. With the thaw underway, early morning walks along the Old Harbour or visits to the colourful wooden houses of the 101 district feel fresh and inviting. The extension of daylight makes evening trips to the peninsula of Seltjarnarnes or blue-skied views from Hallgrímskirkja more comfortable, and longer light at dusk invites landscape photography, coastal sails and glacier excursions outside the city without the depths of winter’s darkness.

Summer 2026
Summer in Reykjavík is mild yet vibrant: average highs reach around 12-14 °C in July and August, while nights hover near 9-10 °C. This is the driest season, with June averaging around 55 mm of rainfall and fewer wet days. Long daylight hours - up to 20 + hours in June - turn evenings into extended outing time. Visitors can stroll the waterfront at Laugavegur, join whale-watching off Reykjavík’s bay, hike to Mount Esja in late-evening light or enjoy open-air concerts by the harbour. Geothermal pools stay lively under pale skies and day trips to the Golden Circle or Westman Islands are fully accessible. While temperatures feel cool compared to many destinations, the light, atmosphere and outdoor rhythm make Reykjavík at its most active.

Autumn 2026
Autumn brings cooling air and patterned skies: daytime highs in September remain near 10-11 °C, but by November they often fall toward 3-4 °C, with nights dipping near freezing. Rainfall rises again and October often ranks among the wetter months, increasing cloud cover and wind. The turning season highlights trips to the outskirts of Reykjavík: viewing migrating seabirds, visiting the Reykjanes lighthouse, and seeking early-night sky vistas for the Northern Lights. Museum visits or the Perlan planetarium feel timely. As crowds thin and daylight shortens, Reykjavík’s cafés, creative spaces and galleries take centre stage - ideal for a slower city-experience as winter approaches and the light softens on the Harpa concert hall façade.

Stunning, Magical, and Fun

Budget accommodations were surprisingly cozy. The guide was patient and fun. Blue Lagoon was relaxing, the Icelandic horses were adorable, and geothermal greenhouses were fascinating. Each day had something unique, and the Northern Lights program made it all feel special.
