Best Time to Visit Toronto

Spring 2026
In Toronto the thaw begins with March bringing daytime highs around 4 °C (39 °F) and by May rising to roughly 17 °C (63 °F) as nature stirs. Rainfall becomes more frequent and the city’s lake-effect breezes from Lake Ontario remain cool enough to remind visitors of Canada’s chillier edge. This is a fresh and lively time to explore the city’s outdoor offerings. Head to the cherry-blossom displays in High Park in late April/early May, stroll along the waterfront at the Toronto Islands as the mild sun returns, or enjoy graffiti tours around the Distillery District without summer’s crush. Many cafes open their terraces and festivals start to pop up, but evenings and early days can still be brisk so layering is wise. Travelling in spring offers the benefit of fewer crowds, lower hotel rates, and the chance to witness the city waking up after winter in a gentle, fresh-feeling mode.

Summer 2026
Summer in Toronto means warm, often humid days, with daytime highs typically in the low to mid-20s °C (70s °F) and occasionally touching 30 °C (86 °F) in July or August. Long daylight hours and clear skies make June to early September the city’s peak outing season. This season is ideal for waterfront fun at the Beaches or Queen’s Quay, for boat lifts to the Toronto Islands, or for enjoying outdoor concerts and patio dinners in districts like Kensington Market and the Distillery District. A visit to the iconic CN Tower during golden-hour gives sweeping views before evenings come alive. Festivals such as the Canada Day celebrations, summer film fests and food events dominate. Be aware that summer is high-season: hotels fill up, tour queues grow, and midday heat may slow down walking tours. But the vibrant, energetic feel - with long warm evenings and full city life - is a standout for experiencing Toronto at full throttle.

Autumn 2026
Autumn ushers in crisp, colourful days across Toronto - early September often still enjoys highs around 18-22 °C (64-72 °F) before sliding into 10-°15 °C (50-59 °F) by November. Leaves shift to brilliant shades of gold, orange and red in city parks, and the cooler air makes walking and biking hugely pleasant. This is a top time to roam the scenic trails of High Park, ride a ferry to the Toronto Islands on a comfortable morning, or cruise around neighbourhoods like The Annex and Little Italy without the summer crowds. The food and drink scene also perks up: harvest menus, local craft brews, and cozy cafés beckon. For city-view photos, take in the vista from the CN Tower against autumn foliage. Visit this season for mellow energy, rich colours and a slightly slower pace in a major city setting.

Winter 2026/2027
Winter in Toronto brings cold to very cold conditions. January averages hover near -1 °C (30 °F) for highs and -8 °C (17 °F) for lows. Snow is frequent between November and April, and wind-chill and lake effects can make things feel especially brisk. Despite the cold, winter offers a different kind of allure in Toronto. The city’s skating rinks (such as at Nathan Phillips Square), Christmas markets, and holiday-lights festivals bring warmth to the cold nights. Museums, galleries and indoor experiences like the Royal Ontario Museum or the Art Gallery of Ontario become cozy refuges. For something adventurous you might join the crowds at hockey or indoor sports, or take a winter walk along the lake-edge with insulating layers. Many visitors find great value in quieter hotel periods and fewer line-ups.

Reviews for Toronto Tours

I
3-Day Canada Iconic City Tour from Toronto: $1 Fairmont Hotel Upgrade | Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec and Kingston

The tour checked all the boxes for seeing Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec, and the bus had plenty of space for luggage. The Fairmont upgrade was lovely, but I found the mandatory 4 optional tours rule a bit restrictive—I only wanted to do the Ice Hotel and Thousand Islands helicopter ride, so the penalty fee made me add one more activity I wasn’t super interested in. Guide was friendly and helpful, though!

FAQs about Toronto Tours

When is the best time to visit Toronto?

June to August is peak season for warm weather and major outdoor festivals like TIFF and Pride. However, September and October offer the best balance of mild temperatures, stunning fall colors, and lower hotel rates. If you visit in winter (December–February), prepare for temperatures below freezing, but enjoy the Distillery District Christmas Market and skating at Nathan Phillips Square.

Do I need a PRESTO card, or can I just use my credit card?

You don’t need a physical transit card anymore. You can simply tap your credit card, debit card, or mobile wallet (Apple/Google Pay) on any TTC bus, streetcar, or subway reader. Just ensure you tap the same card or device every time you transfer to avoid being charged twice.

Is Toronto safe for tourists?

Toronto is widely considered one of North America’s safest major cities. While high-traffic areas like Downtown Toronto, the CN Tower, and districts like Yorkville are very secure, use standard urban caution. Avoid the intersection of Sherbourne and Queen Street East at night due to visible social issues. Keep personal belongings secure in crowded spots like Eaton Centre to prevent petty theft.

What are the top things to do in Toronto for first-time visitors?

Start with classic highlights like visiting the CN Tower, exploring St. Lawrence Market for local foods, and spending time at the Distillery District. Cycling or walking along the waterfront and taking a ferry to the Toronto Islands add outdoor experiences. Many visitors also include City Cruises on Lake Ontario or visiting sites like Casa Loma and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
