Ancient Ruins Tour

Travel back in time on the Ancient Ruins Tour and uncover the mystery of the Sinagua. This tour takes you on a fascinating archaeological adventure through a Native American cliff dwelling built in the 12th Century AD.

People have called Red Rock Country home for thousands of years, from the earliest big game hunters to the most recent Western Yavapai and Tonto Apache Tribes, who still live here today.

Of course, the most prominent culture to live among the Red Rocks was the Southern Sinagua (pronounced seen-A-wuh), who lived in this area from around 600 AD until the early 1400’s. They were pueblo farmers who grew an abundance of corn, beans, squash, and cotton, in this relatively dry environment. The name Sinagua was given to them by Dr. Harold Colton, founder of the Museum of Northern Arizona, who studied ruin sites in the region.

The name Sinagua was derived from the Spanish words sin (without) and agua (water) which came from the early Spanish, who called the San Francisco Peaks north of Flagtaff, the Sierra Sin Agua or “Mountains Without Water.” Dr. Colton, impressed with this pueblo culture’s dry farming ability, believed the name Sinagua was appropriate.

Join Pink Jeep Tours as we uncover the mystery while exploring the history of the Sinagua at the Honanki Heritage Site. While at Honanki, you’ll have plenty of time to marvel at the ruins. Hear what the name Honanki means in the Hopi language.

You will learn about dry farming techniques and survival strategies that made the Sinagua successful in this dry environment. Discover why these people built their homes in the recesses of the rock formations. Find out what daily life may have been like in these cliff castles. Marvel at the rock art on site, from petroglyphs and pictographs of the ancients to historic inscription left by early pioneers over 100 years ago.

Your guide will also uncover the mystery about these people who “just disappeared” over 700 years ago. We may not know everything about the Sinagua, but your Pink Jeep Tours guide will present what archeologists have uncovered about them along with myths and legends of modern Native American Cultures.

Come explore and discover Honanki on the Ancient Ruin Tour. Your adventure will begin in Sedona, inside a custom-built, open-air pink Jeep Wrangler vehicle. Your guide is an expert driver and trained interpreter ready to share stories and little-known facts about Sedona’s history, geology, and flora and fauna. Some of the oldest houses are here in the Southwest. Come gather a stronger grasp on the Southwest’s past the fun and exciting way on this Pink Jeep Tours’ archeological adventure.
