Day 1: New York City - Philadelphia - Washington, D.C.
Summary of The Day: Your journey begins when you depart from NYC in the morning and make your way to the historical city of Philadelphia. There, you will visit Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. The bus tour will then take you to the nations capital - Washington D.C., where you will visit the Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial. You will also see the White House and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. You can also take a relaxing sightseeing cruise along the Potomac River (admission not included), where you will see landmarks such as Kennedy Center, the Washington Monument, the U. S. Capitol and many more!
Visiting Attractions:
Independence Hall
Independence Hall: Both the United States Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed at this historically significant Philadelphia structure that once had the famed Liberty Bell in its Bell Tower. Independence Hall was finished in 1753 using a design by Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley under the orders of the Pennsylvania Colonial Legislature. Other important events that happened in this building were the appointment of George Washington to head the Continental Army in 1775, adoption of the U.S. Flag design in 1777 and the Articles of Confederation approval in 1781. Independence Hall, which is part of Independence National Historic Park, is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site.
Liberty Bell
Liberty Bell: This legendary symbol of freedom in the United States containing a distinctive crack is on display protected by a glass case in the Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The mostly copper Liberty Bell was made in 1752 by British firm White Chapel Foundry with the the Bible verse "Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land unto all the inhabitants thereof" engraved on it. It was cracked when it first arrived in Philadelphia. The Liberty Bell Center features multimedia presentations and exhibits on the history of the Liberty Bell.
Lincoln Memorial
Lincoln Memorial: The prominent Washington, D.C. monument honoring United States President Abraham Lincoln is situated on the National Mall and includes a 2,029-foot reflecting pool. Lincoln Memorial designed by architect Henry Bacon, sculptor Daniel Chester French and artist Jules Guerin in Beaux-Arts style was dedicated in 1922. It features a large sculpture of the 16th president encased in an ancient Greek style temple with Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address" and "Second Inaugural Address" engraved in the memorial. The landmark receives more than six million visitors per year and is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Lincoln Memorial is pictured on both the back of the U.S. five dollar bill and penny.
Thomas Jefferson Memorial
Thomas Jefferson Memorial: The Neo-classical style circular monument situated along the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. honors the third United States president and one of the country's Founding Fathers. The Thomas Jefferson Memorial was designed by John Russell Pope to resemble the Roman Pantheon and built between 1939-43 with a 19-foot statue of Jefferson by Rudulph Evans added in 1947. Inscriptions on the memorial's inside walls include lines from the 1776 Declaration of Independence, 1777 A Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom and an 1800 letter about not having a state religion. The landmark is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
White House
White House: This famous Washington, D.C. mansion is the official residence of the United States president and its location was chosen by George Washington back in 1791. The White House was designed by architect James Hoban and contains 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, eight staircases and three elevators. Before U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt officially named it the White House in 1901, it was called "The President's House," "The President's Palace" and "Executive Mansion." Various presidents have had the structure renovated and restored throughout the decades. The White House displays many fine pieces of art including paintings, sculptures and furnishings.
Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Vietnam Veterans Memorial: The emotionally stirring landmark in the United States capital city is made up of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, Three Soldiers Statue and Vietnam Women's Memorial and attracts more than three million visitors per year. It was dedicated in 1982 and thousands of Vietnam veterans marched to it during the ceremony. Catalogs at the memorial's entrance can assist visitors in finding a name on the wall.
Washington Monument
Washington Monument: This 555-foot iconic symbol of Washington, D.C. that is the tallest obelisk in the world was dedicated to the first president of the United States and designed by architect Robert Mills. Washington Monument's construction began in 1848 and ended in 1884 with a recess from 1854-77 due to several issues including the United States Civil War. Its inside contains 193 commemorative stones given to the U.S. government to honor George Washington from governments and private organizations from around the world. The monument closed for repairs needed after both the 2011 Virginia earthquake and the subsequent Hurricane Irene.
