Bogota - Zipaquira Salt Cathedral - Bogota

Travel 180 meters underground and let yourself be amazed by a world-class Colombian wonder: a majestic cathedral built inside the depths of the biggest salt rock reserve on earth. Zipaquira Salt Cathedral deserves every piece of its fame. It's a place where the mysticism of Muiscas, Catholic symbology and engineering power have come together in one place to guide its visitors on a magical tour through tunnels and vaults of impressive sizes.

This splendid work of engineering and art was opened to the public in 1995. On this tour you will enter an old salt mine that was adapted to become a cathedral. Here, the materials found underground have been manipulated by artists and sculptors, and with some help of amazing lighting effects, those things have given birth to an original interpretation of Catholic symbols. Learn from an expert guide about this process and the symbology behind the works of art you will see along the tour.

Upon exiting, we will head to the colonial village of Zipaquira. We will walk through the main square, which is surrounded by several buildings that are declared national monuments. We will have time to taste the delicious baked goods of the region and we will have a stop at the local handicraft market.

This tour is available in the morning and afternoon.
The morning pick-up time is at 8:30am and drop-off is at 1:30pm
The afternoon pick-up time is at 2:00pm and drop-off is at 7:00pm

    Coffee and Salt tours

We were lucky enough to have Fabian as our tour guide for our back to back tours of the coffee plantation and the salt mines. The coffee plantation gives a great end to end tour of the coffee making process from an expert - and ends in a de...licious authentic side-of-the-road type local lunch. The salt mine is unique way to spend half a day. Thank you Fabian for all your knowledge and incredible attitude keeping up with our spanglish speaking family and providing a great intro during our first few days in colombia! Read full review

    Great tours of Bogota attractions!

"I traveled to Bogota with my girlfriend, and we had a few attractions we definitely wanted to tour, two of which were la Chorrera Waterfall Tour and the tour of the Zipaquira Salt Cathedral. Overall, Destino Bogota and our guide, Andres, w...ere great for both as detailed below! La Chorrera Waterfall Tour: We booked this tour before coming to Colombia, and scheduled it for the first day of our trip. We realized it was recommended that you do the hike after a couple days in Bogota if you are not used to the altitude, and I would agree as there is a lot of hiking up and down and you can get very winded! On the morning of the tour we were picked up directly from our hotel by a driver and tour guide, Andres. On the way to the tour, we found out the narrow highway was completely closed for construction, but Andres said we could reschedule for the next day with no problem. Essentially, we got a free introduction to the countryside and even stopped at a well known church on the mountain to look around for a bit on our way back. Andres and the Company were very flexible and accommodating to make sure the roads issue did not ruin our experience! We were able to take the tour the following day, and it was AMAZING! The hike was somewhat challenging, and we are an active couple who walk and/or hike pretty normally. It was part due to the altitude as mentioned, but more-so because the trail was a lot of incline and decline, and stepping from rock to rock (no simple gravel trail). We both wore Nike tennis shoes and were fine, while Andres had hiking boots (would have been ideal, but that's tough to pack for). The views were incredible, and Andres had a lot of knowledge about the surrounding plants and wildlife we encountered throughout. Definitely bring a camera, water, sunglasses and hiking ability. After the tour we returned to the Candelaria neighborhood of Bogota (which was conveniently right near our hotel) and had lunch with Andres. He knew a great restaurant with local cuisine which was fantastic, and the lunch was included in the price of the tour! We highly recommend the waterfall tour, it was our favorite of our whole trip! Zipaquira Salt Cathedral: This tour we did not book in advance of our trip. After the waterfall tour we mentioned to Andres that we wanted to see the Salt Cathedral, and he offered to book us through Destino Bogota for the following day. We decided that was a good idea, and he even agreed to guide us on that tour as well. The driver and Andres picked us up from the hotel once again, and we drove about an hour to the salt mine. The tour was an easy walk inside the mine, which had very interesting stories and unique views inside. This was not the most exciting tour, but was very unique and interesting. Bring a camera, but not much else is needed. One thing we did not like was the distance to get there and back if staying in downtown Bogota. The drive was primarily on main highway/roads, and we hit a lot of traffic on the way back which took close to 2 hours." Read full review

    Perfect help on the ground

I came to Bogota for the first time with a group of 25 American tourists in their late 20s. None of us spoke passable Spanish. We had an ambitious itinerary that required night clubs reservations, restaurant tables, vehicles, and tourist gu...ides. We relied on Destine Bogota. Paula and her team were incredible. They liaised with me well in advance to research and facilitate everything we needed. The trip went smoothly. Our guide, Alejandro, was first-class. We just had to show up and everything was arranged as advertised. I rarely write reviews like this, but Destino Bogota went above and beyond the call of duty at every point. My only regret is we had to leave Bogota when we did--what an Amazing city! Read full review

    Very positive experience

Out of several travel agencies I contacted before traveling to Colombia Destino Bogotá was the fastest and most professional in answering to my queries. It was very easy to book the two trips I took (Zipaquira/Guatavita and Coffee tour/Jard...in) and I got all necessary information well in advance. Both my tours were excellent, safe drivers, great guides. Big thanks to Doriel and Fredy and also to Steven. I would definitely book again through Destino Bogota and recommend it to friends. Private tour -- salt cathedral transport

I contacted destino bogota because we had relatively limited time between a domestic and an international flight through bogota and we wanted to try and see the salt cathedral plus have a short walk and some food/drink in Bogota. As such, I... needed to organise a private tour from the airport to the salt cathedral with a return to Bogota city centre. Destino bogota was very timely in their response, transparent with respect to pricing and clear as to what would/would not be included. I also appreciated the ability to pay via an easy online payment provider 100% upfront or pay a 20% deposit in advance and the remainder in cash to the driver. Our driver was punctual, he spoke some English, he was extremely friendly and very helpful. A high level of professionalism in my view. Our tour was just over 5hrs in duration due to traffic in Bogota. We were picked up at the airport, we left our luggage in the left luggage place at El Dorado airport, we went to the cathedral and waited for the English tour. We skipped the video but added the miner's experience for COP6,000pp (30min add on that runs every 45mins). Great decision to do this because even though it was in Spanish, we could figure out majority of what was being said/asked of us and it was fun to be in the tunnels in the dark and try and dig for salt with the chisel, etc. Overall, we were in the cathedral for just over 2hrs. We got back in the car and were dropped off in the Candelaria area of Bogota. Would highly recommend Destino Bogota and the trip to the salt cathedral. Read full review
