The 740-acre zoo has more than 2,000 animals belonging to 500-plus species and approximately 1,000 types of trees and plants. Zoo Miami began in 1948 as the 53.5-acre Crandon Park Zoo in Key Biscayne then moved to southwest Miami-Dade County to open the current facility as Miami Metrozoo in 1980 and then changed its name in 2010. Its exhibits include Amazon & Beyond, Asia, The American Bankers Family Aviary, Africa, The Americas, Australia, Dr. Wilde's World of Discovery and The Children's Zoo. Zoo Miami also features camel rides, a giraffe feeding station, wild animal encounters, water play areas, playgrounds, eateries and a gift shop.
